According to the EIA/TIA standard, the M12 connector corresponds to the transmission technical conditions of the Category 5 modular jack (RJ45). Using D-coding prevents incorrect engagement with A-coding (for sensor and actuator wiring) and B-coding (for some fieldbuses).
The M12 connector was not available for printed circuit boards until 2005, when the circular M12 connector with surface mount termination was born. Surface mount termination facilitates miniaturization of field devices. The sturdy pins allow it to pass through bulk packaging and the corresponding feeding process using a vibrating bowl.
